Day 3
Reeth to Coxwold
43.6 miles with 2,344 ft of climbing
The weather was much improved as we left Reeth. I am not sure about Mal but my legs were still feeling the effects of the previous day so it was with some trepidation that that I faced the first (and only major) climb of the day from Grinton and up to Ellerton Moor. I almost had an 'off' at Cogden Bridge when after descending the approach I was following close behind Mal. There were a couple of sheep at the roadside and I did not see them until we were passing, as we passed they were startled and one made a dash across the road right in front of me. Fortunately I managed to avoid a collision so no harm was done, I am used to riding on sheep moors and should have stayed further back because sheep are silly unpredictable creatures at the best of times and you never know what they are going to do.
After crossing the high ground by the MOD ranges we had a few pleasant miles thrashing downhill until we reached Leyburn Where Mal had a little shopping to do after our morning coffee, he needed a little gizmo to help charge his doodah and thingummy jig but manged to buy the wrong wotsit :)
After Leyburn the scenery was totally different with the high moorland changing to green fields and such. We were starting to get back into an area that I once knew well and I began to recognize different places that I had not seen for many years. I don't think I ever realized how beautiful this area was. We ambled along for a while until we reached the village of Snape, a pretty and well kept village where I imagine the locals wipe their feet before they go outdoors.
We had a short break at Snape before pushing on to Thirsk by way of Carleton Minniot, and then after another coffee break, carried on past the White Horse of Kilburn and on to Coxwold where we had booked a night at 'Rumah Home'.
For our evening meal we went along to the Faucenburgh Arms, a short walk away where we enjoyed a meal lamb steakes followed in my case, with cheese and biscuits.
